Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer who also have an interest in philosophical ideas will get a kick out of this book. It’s a collection of essays by people of differing credentials on some of the greater ideas seemingly demonstrated and discussed by the show.
It’s not often one gets to contemplate how Kant, Plato, Hegel, and the rest apply to our beloved TV stories.
As with any collection, each essay will hit or miss depending on the reader. Overall, I would say that this was an interesting read but not that fulfilling.
I found it a bit too mainstreamed for my expectations. I thought these were items that could have been more seriously (academically) developed and supported.
Because things tended to skim rather than delve, not many of the points stuck in my head. I remember generalities more than actual arguments. For example, I know that Spike’s chip was discussed heavily in regards to morality, control, punishment, etc. But I couldn’t tell you which philosophers were invoked and how.
Obviously, I think Buffy the Vampire Slayer could hold up to a more rigorous treatment. This book was fun and thoughtful in places, but it is not a read that will stay with me.
