Movie: Grey Gardens

I didn’t even know this movie was out there. Really, it should have gotten more attention than it did.

For anyone fascinated with the original Grey Gardens documentary, and frankly who isn’t, this movie will be an interesting revisit with the Beales. The filmmakers didn’t try to change the story or put in new twists. This movie follows the story trajectory of the original documentary and just embellishes it.

We see Edith and Little Edie before their isolation, although I’m not sure how much of it is historical record and how much is just pure fiction, but at the end, I think you’ll end up feeling about these two women how you felt, whether positively or negatively, at the end of the documentary.

As I said though, this movie is very well made. The sets and costuming are wonderful. It moves along quite well, but best of all, it features two fantastic performances by Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore. It’s probably not a surprise that Jessica Lange does a wonderful job with the elder Edith, but Barrymore, in my opinion, out shines the more decorated actress. Her Little Edie demands your eye and engages your curiosity.
