January 1, 2010

In the past, I’ve had a rocky relationship with New Year’s Day. I would get depressed about the passing of time and how little I’ve been able to do relative to that time. I get the same way around my birthdays.

This time, I don’t feel my usual regrets and anguish. Am I getting wiser as I get older? Or perhaps I’m just more complacent? Or perhaps the feeling will hit me three weeks from now and is just in delay.

I’ve racked my brain for 2010 goals and haven’t really been able to come up with good ones. Sure, spend less, save more, lose weight, blah, blah, blah.

So without any life changing goals, here are some smaller personal-enrichment ones.

  1. This year will be the year of Napoleon. A military history fan should really know more about him and his campaigns than just the basics.
  2. I’ve never been able to do push ups. It’s time I changed that.
  3. I’m going to try and designate one day a month as “Do Something For Others Day.” Nothing big, but I’m just going to be on the lookout all day for ways that I can be helpful. Thanks to the random number generator, the first day of my experiment will be January 30.

Otherwise, I like the following activities from last year and want to carry them over:

  1. Watch the Academy Award nominated films in the Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Actress categories before the nominations come out in 2011.
  2. Reading Challenges I’ve accepted so far:

I’m also very fortunate to have a free trip waiting for me this year. I won round-trip airfare to and two nights’ hotel stay in any place in the continental United States. Cool, huh? New York City tops the choices right now, but I’m still soliciting suggestions. Please lease me a comment if you have a recommendation!
