Audiobook: On Writing by Stephen King

I stay away from scary stuff so I haven’t read any of Stephen King’s actual novels. The first time I encountered his writings was on the back page of an Entertainment Weekly magazine.

His monthly columns made me realize that his tastes and mine are pretty close. And I also found out that he is a darn good writer with an ability for clarity.

I’ve heard good things about On Writing, his tutorial about, words of wisdom on, and personal history of—writing.

Before he gets into the nuts and bolts, Stephen King describes the significant experiences of his childhood. As advertised, he is an outstanding storyteller.

audio book challengeI don’t think anyone can read or listen to his ordeal with the huge needle during a serious ear infection bout and not cringe, squirm, and feel like throwing up.

This section made me confident in, and trusting of, the advice that will follow in the book.

Note for the audiobook version: Stephen King reads his own work so his voice adds to the intimacies of his stories and the solidness of his thoughts on the writing process.

It doesn’t matter if you are a writer or a reader, I think you will overlook the contradictions in his own advocacies and consider you time with this work well spent. I’m not going to pretend that I write well, but it has already affected the way I read.
