Reflecting on Michael Jackson’s Memorial and Life

I find that every funeral, memorial service, and wake is reflective for me. I grew up during the height of Michael Jackson’s solo career, but he did not touch my life as deeply as he did others.

Of course I knew his art and his immense popularity, but when he passed, if it wasn’t for all this worldwide reaction, I would have noted it and moved on.

But thanks to the select coverage that I’ve watched over the last few days and today’s memorial service, the achievements and meaning of Michael Jackson returned to me.

He’s been a punchline for a while now, and it was nice to be reminded (because this is something I knew and had somehow forgotten) of his great achievements and significance.

Someday, we will all be nothing but legacies and memories within others. For all his faults, quirks, and the controversies that wrap around him, Michael meant a heck of a lot to so many people, to our culture, and to the world at large.

I was thinking today that whatever our sphere, we can be significant if we really wanted to be.

He led a life without rest, ease, and comfort. I hope he’s finding his peace now.

My Reading Lists Going Public

I’ve been reading a lot more this year.

There are reading challenges and book clubs with which to keep up. My longer commutes have also brought audiobooks back into my life.

And how great is the library? So much for free!

To help me keep track of all this, I’ve added the books on my “active” bookshelf to the right hand column of this blog. Perhaps the embarrassment of having something up there for a year and a half will encourage me to actually read it.

And if you are so inclined, you are more than welcome to read along.

The graphic novels are not listed though. I’m still going through those like water though. Unless they are terribly interesting, you won’t read about them here.
