Impressions for Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse and the Movie Coraline

Dollhouse premiered last night. It was clunky and not that much fun. I have a feeling that when this show gets canceled and the DVD boxed set gets released, we’ll find out that the original Pilot worked much better.

I remember watching the first aired episode of Firefly and going WTF. The DVD sequence kept me going where as the airing schedule on FOX did not.

So far, the genre has not been played with or turned on its head. There’s not much humor at all, and the mission wasn’t that interesting. I hope it gets better.

The movie Coraline was pretty engrossing as a visual experience. The boyfriend and I saw it in 3D, which I do recommend.

I’m a person who doesn’t like scary movies at all. Going in, I was concerned that it would be too scary for me. I’m happy to report that it wasn’t.

When I was a kid though, the back wall of my closet freaked me out. Between The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe and this Choose Your Own Adventure series where a doorway developed from behind the clothes, there was no way I was putting any more of my body into the closet than was absolutely necessary. If I saw this at a younger age, I think it would have scared me.

Story-wise, the plot is pretty strong. Children may get a bit lost though because significant points are told almost in passing. It does go on a segment or two too long, but I can live with that.

The characters are well developed, and the voice work is strong all around.

If I picked the Oscars: (in order of my vote)
