Chicago Artist Aaron Kobiella’s Amazing Wood Pieces
I’d like to share another great artistic find at the SmART show last weekend. The work below is by Aaron Kobiella. Its scale is hard to tell in the photograph, but this is a large piece (5′ 4″ x 5′ 4″). It’s also hard to tell, both in the photograph and in person, that this is a piece on wood.

The artist was kind enough to explain his process when I visited his studio.
He starts with cedar boards and sketches out his design. Then the pieces are cut out and prepped. If it makes sense to join separate pieces to create a form, he does it.
With the way that it mounts, the work seems to float off the wall. You can see the shadow it casts in the picture.
You can probably tell by the picture that this artist likes to explore concepts of light and spectrums and vibrations.
I brought my parents up to see his work later. My Dad said that a series in this style would be great for those event icons during the Olympics—if the games ever came here.
I loved that idea. If you click on the image, you’ll see in the larger picture that there’s space in between each section. Each muscle group is emphasized while the overall harmony of movement is emphasized.
Tomorrow, I’m going to put up his piece called Red Lunar Dragon. You can see more of his works at his website Spectrum Vibes. Or visit his studio on the third floor (#344) of the Flat Iron Building.
