In Preparation Mode for 2009

I’m deep in the middle of my end-of-the-year tradition. As the new year arrives, I like to feel organized and prepared for it. I like my systems to be in place and contingencies developed.

I try to achieve this by getting rid of stuff and refiguring my finances.

Getting rid of stuff helps me organize the things I really want to keep. I know these items have a purpose, and I can match them to their physical spaces.

Having fewer possessions eliminates clutter. I’m less stressed when I have fewer things crammed everywhere. I like that I don’t have as many things to clean.

Downsizing also makes decision making easier. Questions such as “What should I wear?” and “What should I use?” are answered much faster than before.

Purging materials saves me money as well. I know what I have. I know what I need. I don’t waste time and money getting duplicates or making unnecessary purchases.

It’s been a while since I refigured my finances. I worked at my old job for six years and moving to the condo really didn’t change much. But now, I have my own business.

The national and international economies have changed. My personal economy has changed. I need to make sure I know what I need for 2009.

How much do I need in my emergency fund? How much do I need to cover monthly expenses? What are my monthly expenses? Where do I want to vacation and how much will that cost?

And for my business, how much do I need to put in to make it grow?

So far, I’m doing fairly well on the getting rid of stuff. As for the financial planning, I just got my post-holidays credit card statements so once I pay those off, I’ll be better able to focus on next year’s information.

Man, and I thought I was so careful and thrifty this December. :(

What are you doing to get ready for the new year?
