In Preparation Mode for 2009

I’m deep in the middle of my end-of-the-year tradition. As the new year arrives, I like to feel organized and prepared for it. I like my systems to be in place and contingencies developed.

I try to achieve this by getting rid of stuff and refiguring my finances.

Getting rid of stuff helps me organize the things I really want to keep. I know these items have a purpose, and I can match them to their physical spaces.

Having fewer possessions eliminates clutter. I’m less stressed when I have fewer things crammed everywhere. I like that I don’t have as many things to clean.

Downsizing also makes decision making easier. Questions such as “What should I wear?” and “What should I use?” are answered much faster than before.

Purging materials saves me money as well. I know what I have. I know what I need. I don’t waste time and money getting duplicates or making unnecessary purchases.

It’s been a while since I refigured my finances. I worked at my old job for six years and moving to the condo really didn’t change much. But now, I have my own business.

The national and international economies have changed. My personal economy has changed. I need to make sure I know what I need for 2009.

How much do I need in my emergency fund? How much do I need to cover monthly expenses? What are my monthly expenses? Where do I want to vacation and how much will that cost?

And for my business, how much do I need to put in to make it grow?

So far, I’m doing fairly well on the getting rid of stuff. As for the financial planning, I just got my post-holidays credit card statements so once I pay those off, I’ll be better able to focus on next year’s information.

Man, and I thought I was so careful and thrifty this December. :(

What are you doing to get ready for the new year?

The 2008 Netflix Cost-Analysis Breakdown

If you drop by here with any regularity, you know I’m a huge fan of my Netflixmembership. It’s a good value for me, and here’s the breakdown to prove it.

Plan: 3-at-a-time
Cost per month: $18.35
Cost for the year: $220.20
Number of discs viewed: 95
Cost per disc: $2.32

Number of bonus Watch Instantly items viewed: 35

(These are the numbers I’m presenting even though changing sales tax percentages and gift card amounts modified my own personal cost over the course of the year. It’s just easier to use the most-recent numbers.)

The stats are pretty obvious but to spell it out, this is how this service benefits me:

  1. I watch a lot of TV through Netflix. Since I have it, I don’t have to pay for any of the premium cable channels. This saves me about $25 a month.
  2. Every disc brings me of at least two hours of entertainment. Within this time period, I don’t have to look for any other distractions. As an hourly rate, it’s only costing me $1.16 an hour for this fun preoccupation. That’s saved me money as well.
  3. I’m not locked into a TV viewing schedule or feel the need to catch a movie before it leaves the theaters. This frees up my life and allows me flexibility with plans. I love that.
  4. And finally, I like that I can have regular content for this blog.

How was your Netflix experience this year? Is the service worth your while?
