TV: I Do Watch Comedies

I don’t really have much to say about the half-hour comedies I netflix, but I don’t want to seem like I only watch hour-long TV shows. So here are the comedies I currently follow:

  • The Office
  • 30 Rock
  • How I Met Your Mother
  • Entourage

Yup. Nothing first run so I am at least one season behind on everything.

Doctor Who - Yay!, Heroes - Boooo

Netflix just told me that the first two discs of Doctor Who Season 4 are coming next. Holy cow, how long have I been waiting for this? As MaryAnn Johanson says:

As far as I am concerned, if you’re not madly in love with the Doctor and wouldn’t drop everything to hop into the TARDIS and probably end up getting killed on some alien planet eight million years in the past by Daleks or Cybermen or Slitheen, then there is an unbridgeable chasm between us, and we have nothing to talk about.

Now I may do a Martha Jones and eventually leave, but when the “woolf, woolf” sound is heard, I’ll always come running.

[topic break]

This is the first season of Heroes that I’ve seen live. For the other two seasons, I watched them pretty much straight through via Netflix’s Watch Instantly feature. (Do you get the sense that I love my Netflix?)

So for me, the first season was not as great as everyone else seemed to think it was, and the second season was not as bad as everyone was saying it was.

Except for the twins. They really were horrible.

So now, I think I finally understand the frustrations of the viewing public with this show. The end game doesn’t change from season to season. I can’t keep track of who did what to whom and for what reason. There is this promise of big things yet to come, but last night, once again, nothing seemed to push the story forward.

I’m bored.

I think if I could watch this season all in a row, it would come off more favorably, but as it stands, the show is lagging.

TV: Torchwood Season 2

I wasn’t too enamored with Season 1 of Torchwood. Back then, the Torchwood team flat out annoyed me most of the time.

Things have gotten better for Season 2. Now, I at least can tolerate the team members. They, however, are still not that special to me. I don’t particularly care about any of them. (That’s not to say that the finale didn’t get to me. I did go for the hankies there.)

My favorite episodes to watch were the ones guesting Martha Jones. She, as a character, turned out alright. Plus, she still has the residual magic of The Doctor with her.

Surprisingly, I wasn’t that wowed by the James Marsters (Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) episodes. In general, I thought the Gray storyline was told too quickly and wrapped up too abruptly. No, I don’t believe the saga is over, but I thought they could have marinated the story over the course of the season. There was so much angst to mine. As it was, it seemed to contain almost comic book surface reactions rather than the soul-changing reflections that should have been there.

Netflix, Inc.Yes, I know that it is a sci-fi adventure series but the best genre shows are the ones that transcend those expectations.

For me, the most positive change in season 2 was with the Rhys character. I like his increased involvement. Rather than being the cuckolded idiot, they are showcasing his strength, loyalty, and kindness. As they lost Gwen as the common man/viewer surrogate, they gained someone whose goodness is obvious and whose outrage is justified.

I’ll continue watching the series because there’s really nothing to dissuade me from it. I just wish the series could find a good tone and manage to capture my attention for an entire episode. As good as some of the parts are, I still find myself bored sometimes. This magical-in-all-ways Rift is starting to get tiresome too.
