Thorne Auditorium (Northwestern University) and Mandal Hall (University of Chicago)

When I go see a performance in new place, I’m always curious about the venue ahead of time. I’m the type of person who will look up my seat on a seating chart. Then I’ll scrutinize the schematic, trying to figure out the relative dimensions.

But those line drawings do not help the imagination at all. It’s so much better with a picture. If you are like me at all, you probably came here through a Google Image search.

Here you go then.

Mandel Hall feels like an older room. There’s a wrap-around balcony with chairs that are more comfortable than the ones on the floor. They don’t get dusted much though and are not the cleanest seats in which to sit.

On the night I was there, the space was boiling. It was uncomfortably hot at times. I would recommend dressing in layers as no drinks are allowed inside.

The picture pretty much says it all.
