Travel: Day 1, Part 2-Toledo
Finally on the road, our route was going to be I-69 to US 24 to I-75. I thought we were going up the interstates all the way so this was a pleasant surprise. I looked forward to seeing a little bit of Ohio.
My friend is a AAA member so she TripTik-ed the route, and this was suggested by that service. I don’t think we were that far off time-wise and the scenery was definitely better. There were the wide, flat farm lands of Indiana. Those changed into the little rural towns of western Ohio with lots of little waterways dotting the ride.
I was excited about going through Toledo. As a child, I thought the name “To-le-do” was so fun to say. Add on “O-hi-o” and you had fifteen minutes of entertainment at least. Either you couldn’t see much of the city from our road or there isn’t much to see. I pictured a kind of industrial hub, like a mini-Milwaukee, but I didn’t see a city center from the road.
Trip Highlight: I ate at my first ever Big Boy in Defiance, OH. It was good. The patties are grilled with crispy edges and they put tartar sauce on it. The fries were buttery. Yum.
Eventually, we crossed into Michigan.
Finally! Somewhere with roads worse than Illinois.
We’re staying at the Sleep Inn in Lincoln Park. I’ll write a hotel review up separately. We got a quick and easy KFC dinner. The coleslaw had started to turn. I ate half of it anyway. Since I’m writing this after the fact, I’m happy to say that I did not get sick. My friend was feeling a bit queasy from her meal too. I think we got a bad batch that night.
