Movie: The Secret of Kells

Unlike The Illusionist, this may be a movie worth watching for the visuals alone. Luckily, the story is not too horrid to sit through and is even quite enjoyable.

An amusing multi-ethnic band of monks are making illuminated manuscripts at Kells, which sits in prime Viking-raiding territory. The Secret of Kells takes Irish motifs and the art of the illuminated manuscripts themselves and folds them into the scenes of the movie. It’s stunning to look at.

There are also great lessons about the importance of books, knowledge, and freedom. Strangely enough, one may also be able to read into the movie a sure yet subtle criticism of Christianity as well. I’m not sure if this is intentional or not, but it sure makes it that much more interesting.

But, seriously, just look at some of this art design.
