Movie: The Visitor
There are performances that overwhelm you with their brilliance. They are so powerful and commanding that you cannot help but notice them. Then there are the performances that are completely at the service of the greater whole.
That’s Richard Jenkins in The Visitor.
His character starts off in a life of quiet desperation. You don’t have to be told that. You can just look at him and know. When Walter Vale, his character, has to interact with other people, the fake front that he puts on will feel so familiar that it’s cringe-inducing.
A random encounter with a pair of illegal immigrants is the beginning of Walter’s renewal. But since this is post-9/11 America, their situations are all going to change.
There is fight and there is grace. Walter Vale is not the same man at the end of it all. You’ll know just by looking at him.
