It's a tricky thing to try and think of biopics purely as films, but that's what I tried to do in order to compare the Academy Award nominees. I was part of the San Francisco gay rights movement, and knew Harvey Milk as a friend... in fact, I knew and photographed almost everyone depicted in the movie with the exception of Dan White. Believe me when I tell you... Sean Penn, and all the actors were like the real characters. Being there, I noticed mistakes in time-line and locations, and a few things that never happened. However, the movie introduced Harvey Milk, and that era in the S.F. gay rights movement to millions of people, young and old, gay and straight, here in the USA and around the globe. I would like to recommend a web-site that is dedicated to the evolution of the Castro... and is not a recreation like the movie. It's the real thing by those like me, who were there and helped to record that time via our cameras and actions.
