Movie: Milk

Milk is a fine, fine film. The ensemble acting here is even better than in Frost/Nixon.

Everything about it is good except… the overall storyline just didn’t grab me. It’s not exactly revelatory to tell me that gay people faced violence and discrimination. So for me, the movie was all about Sean Penn’s performance.

From his very first moment on screen, I was riveted. At one point, I tried to picture what he really moves and sounds like, and I couldn’t. Then I tried to picture one of his other movie creations in my head, and I couldn’t do that either.

The image that was right in front of me was the only one I could accept. Penn made Harvey Milk undeniable.

How I would rate last year’s Best Picture nominees:

Actor in a Leading Role

  3. For me, the movie “Milk” was deja vue the 70’s. I was part of the San Francisco gay rights movement, and knew Harvey Milk as a friend… in fact, I knew and photographed almost everyone depicted in the movie with the exception of Dan White. Believe me when I tell you… Sean Penn, and all the actors were like the real characters. Being there, I noticed mistakes in time-line and locations, and a few things that never happened. However, the movie introduced Harvey Milk, and that era in the S.F. gay rights movement to millions of people, young and old, gay and straight, here in the USA and around the globe. I would like to recommend a web-site that is dedicated to the evolution of the Castro… and is not a recreation like the movie. It’s the real thing by those like me, who were there and helped to record that time via our cameras and actions. It is called:

  4. Wow, Jerry, thanks for sharing those links. It’s a tricky thing to try and think of biopics purely as films, but that’s what I tried to do in order to compare the Academy Award nominees.

Your pictures (and those shared by others) of the real Castro really bring the scene and the times into focus.
