Art: Cross the Line/Condenada by Adriana Baltazar

Cross the Line/Condenada by Adriana Baltazar

I saw this piece at the Defenders of the Earth showcase on August 23. The arts festival was a fundraiser for Connections for Abused Women and Their Children and not a specific art show so I could not get a lot of information on this piece. I wish there was a media listing though. The layering is so interesting.

The work is called Cross the Line/Condenada, and the artist is Adriana Baltazar. The base is some kind of wood laminate(?). I can’t tell if it was treated with anything. The band members almost look like colored pencils but I know that’s highly unlikely.

I really like the wash effect. It’s almost batik-like. The strong ink figures in the foreground tell of the darkened space in contrast to the lightness of the rest of the scene. The overall effect reminds me of many Chicago musical experiences.

Postscript added September 9: Adriana Baltazar has her own website that I couldn’t find on a web search. There’s a description of this work there. It’s a flash gallery though. I can’t link directly to it.

She does use colored pencils! Go me.
