Graphic Novel: The Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Kim Deitch
The Boulevard of Broken Dreams is a highly involved graphic novel that blends art, character, and plot into a very engrossing read. When I read a graphic novel, my first focus is still on the characters and the story. The art can bother me, but an unpleasant style won’t stop me from continuing to the end.
The boyfriend, however, is more than likely to comment on the art first. As an artist and animator, a bad illustrative style will make a graphic novel unbearable for him.
The Boulevard of Broken Dreams satisfied both our standards. The boyfriend raved about the pages, and he helped me realize that the tale I enjoyed so much is based on the real history of animation.
Many of the characters have counterparts in real life, and the progression told in the book reflects actual film history.
Now that I know this, I appreciate the work even more. But I also enjoyed it the first time through, when I didn’t know this background.
