Recommended: Hoover WindTunnel Upright Vacuum Cleaner
In addition to my lovely dog, I’m also cat-sitting for a friend right now. This is not a good time for my vacuum cleaner to break.
Granted, my old vacuum cleaner was a cheapie Dirt Devil that was always going to die but it is still very inconvenient. Come to think of it, you will only find out that your vacuum cleaner is not working when you’re pulling it out to use. And you only wrestle it out of the closet when your place is already dirty. So there really isn’t a good time to find out that your machine is not working.
In any case, I needed another vacuum.
I found the deal at the right on Amazon. Based on the reviews, I decided to give it a try. I’ve never owned an expensive vacuum cleaner before, but with the reconditioned discount and the free shipping, this became such a bargain. A new one is almost $250.
It’s been a month now, and the machine still amazes me. With my old Dirt Devil, I’d have to pass over the same spot several times to get results. With the Hoover, it’s a single-pass in most cases. My dog is a Chow Chow-Labrador mix so he’s not messing around in terms of hair. The machine still picks it right up.
It makes such a difference that the boyfriend even commented on it. He said our rugs didn’t even look this good when they were brand new.
There are negatives with the model, but they are ones that do not affect me much. I will list them here for your benefit though.
- The machine is very heavy. If you need to go up and down stairs or have a big area to clean, it may get tiring.
- The canister is pretty small compared to the suction power. You pick up so much that the canister may require multiple emptyings depending on the size of your room.
- It includes an extra allergy filter that gets really, really dirty. Again, the suction picks up so much dirt. I think most of this stuff would just stay on the ground with other vacuums. There isn’t a good way to clean this filter without getting dirty yourself.
- The reconditioned vacuum may come with cosmetic blemishes.
For me, I have a small single-level condo with area rugs so the weight is not an issue. As a pet owner, I’m willing to trade a little extra work for a powerful cleaning machine. As for the reconditioned state, the functionality seems brand new. If a pristine machine works even better than this, I may be a little afraid of it. According to the Amazon reviews, if you do get a dud, Amazon will arrange and pay shipping for the return product. Nice.
My vacuum came with a paint scrap on the nozzle extension hose and some chipping on the logo. I’m more than happy to live with that though.

Thanks for participating in “Try It Tuesday” - I appreciate it!
I need a new vacuum - I’ll have to check this one out.
My vacuum requires a bit more muscle than I think it should. Maybe a new one is in order. It is almost 15 years old…
It seems to be pretty rare that something so useful and necessary actually works so well. I’m glad I’m able to share my find.
Totallyscrappy: Wow, a fifteen-year-old vacuum cleaner? I would love something that well made.
As someone who does a great deal of research on vacuum cleaners, I can say you made a good choice with the Hoover. I really don’t like the super cheap vacuums as they just don’t work very well. My favorite is and has been the Dyson for some time now, but the Windtunnel certainly runs a close second, IMO, and is much better than the cheapy brands. Great alternative if you don’t want to pay $500 for a vacuum cleaner.
