Olympics: NBC’s Online Streams and the US Women’s Soccer Loss
Yesterday, I wondered how Beijing would answer Barcelona’s challenge of the spectacular caldron lighting. I suppose air-running the circumference of the stadium would do it. It’s dramatic and amazing but at the same time, it’s simple and elegant. I liked it.
I went to nbcolympics.com to plan my viewing schedule and saw that they have live streaming. After loading yet another viewer program onto my computer, I was able to see a really clear streaming image. I just wish the commentary function is more fluid. Even though I’m a long time watcher of the Olympics, I still need the experts to help me figure out what is going on for some events.
Series sailing makes no sense without explanation. Still, if I was working and was the type who would goof off during working hours? This would be an excellent feature.
I saw the two goals that the Norwegians scored in the first four minutes to put the US women at 0-1 in their group. The team may blame it on nerves but those were two ugly goals to give up. The first was poorly played by goalie Hope Solo. The second was a give-away by veteran Kate Markgraf.
It’s been a while since I saw this team, and I was very confused by the line up. I had no idea that Abby Wambach broke her leg and the Kristine Lilly is having a baby. Those are two major field losses.
Looking over the roster, I’m not confident in their chances of even a medal. It’s a pretty young squad. From the last time I saw some of these names, which admittedly was maybe two years ago, they didn’t impress me. The US has always had an embarrassment of riches at the Forward positions. Now, they have Heather O’Reilly, who is certainly top notch. Natasha Kai, who I hope has improved greatly from the last time I saw her. And as for the third forward, I have no idea who Lauren Cheney is.
In doing all this research, I also found out that the Women’s Professional Soccer league is going to relaunch next year. Chicago even has a team this time.
