Art: Watercolors by Jonathan Wijnberg

The Elks Veterans Memorial by Jonathan WijnbergI usually am not a big fan of watercolors. These, however, caught my eye at this past weekend’s smART show.

This was Jonathan Wijnberg’s first show at the Flat Iron Building. Originally from Michigan, he’s been in Chicago since 2007.

Currently, he’s getting yet another master’s degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He’s also making our fair city the subject of his artworks.

At the show, he had many larger oils up on the wall. These unframed watercolors were in a flip-through box.

The Elks Veteran Memorial by Jonathan WijnbergI tend to like color blocks and geometric presentations so his art drew my attention right away. As you can see by these two though, the scenes are rarely straightforward. The well-chosen perspectives and angles in the cityscapes help make them a lot more interesting than that of a more tradition city view.

In case you are not able to place the subject matter, the building pictured is the Elks Veterans Memorial near Diversey and Sheridan.
